On 1 September 1923, one of the worst earthquakes in world history hit the Kanto plain and destroyed Tokyo, Yokohama and the surroundings. About 140,000 people fell victim to this earthquake and the fires caused by it.

The photographs presented in this special online exhibition are a courtesy of the Swiss company SiberHegner which was founded in Yokohama in the year 1865 under the name of Siber & Brennwald. The earthquake of 1923 destroyed the company's headquarters in Yokohama. Please read more about SiberHegner here.
