November 5, 2014 - Shigemori Mirei - The Rebel in the Garden

Shigemori Mirei was a self taught garden designer active between 1939 and 1975. He studied traditional gardens and endeavoured to strike a balance between tradition and modernistic innovation. His approach upset many of the traditionalists with his use of red sand and roof tiles but has subsequently been accepted as a major player in modern gardens. Most of his gardens were of the dry landscape (kare sansui) style. His major works in Kyoto are at the Tofuku-ji temple complex, Matsunoo Taisha shrine and Zuiho-in a sub temple of Daitoku-ji.
