March 17, 2011 - Discount shopping in Sasebo, Japan

I enjoyed living and traveling around Japan for 4 years.  Most of my time was spent in the Arita area of Sasebo.  I have a fondness for Japanese porcelain (yakimono) and am an avid collector of Japanese antiques.  There are many wonderful shops up and down route 35 in Arita with many discounts and deals throughout the year.  I am also fond of Japanese recycle shops.  They are shops identified by a green recycle arrowed triangle so they are easy to spot if you look for these signs.  In the recycle shops you can find wonderful bargains!

In Saza-Cho there are large warehouse buildings filled to the brim with discount antiques and unusual items. There is another decent recycle shop located in Haiki near Sweets Ikuta.  They have many new and like new items as well as antiques.  Located just past Tanagata-Cho heading from the navy base towards Saza-Cho there is a giant recycle shop on the corner by Mos Burger and across the street from the gas station.

You can find many great deals throughout kyomachi shopping arcade and the 100 yen shops throughout Sasebo.  The largest 100 yen shop in Sasebo is off route 35 heading out of town towards the mountains and near Marukyo supermarket. I recommend if you visit Japan to check out any recycle shops you come across.  I also recommend Sakura Antiques in Arita. It is a small shop, but packed with exciting finds. You will be amazed at what treasures you can find!
