March 21, 2014 - Walk the old Tokaido from Fujieda to Kanaya

Though there is nothing specific remains on the 9 km way From Fujieda (“¡Ž}) to Shimada (“‡“c), in some occasion pine tree line that stirs your imagination can be seen.

Near Shimada, 30 minutesf westbound local train ride from JR Shizuoka, please do not miss Horai (–H—‰) bridge.

Horai bridge over Oi river (‘åˆäì) is the longest (897m) wooden pedestrian bridge on earth. It has long history, too. This bridge was constructed in 1879. 100 JPY per person is to be paid when crossing.

After enjoying the river breeze, you can get back to the old Tokaido or walk along the river to Oi gawa bridge(‘åˆäì‹Ž).

Oi river was the most difficult point to progress in Edo period.
Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled this country during this period intentionally left this river unbridged to protect their homeland Edo and Sunpu castle in Shizuoka where Tokugawa Shogunatefs founder Ieyasu had spent his youth.
After Meiji restoration defeated the shogunate, Horai Bridge was constructed eventually.
Nowadays water dosage of Oi river is quite less due to the dam at its upstream but it used to be a sort of rampageous river. So travelers should have to cross the river on bearers' shoulders or on horseback. In cases of bad weather or high waters, they were forced to stay several days.
As the certain result, this area flourished meanwhile it became notorious place among travelers.

The fee depended on how bearers soaked their body in the river.
Sometimes, in accordance with some historical records, they gsoakedh travelers with the threat that they throw him or her into the water stream in the middle of the river.
Today I visited well preserved river side town (every house is for free), then crossed the bridge to get over this river. No one tried to soak me.
After crossing Oi river, you go through beside Shin-Kanaya station (V‹à’J‰w) of Oigawa railways. (‘åˆäì“S“¹)

This company was originally built to facilitate dam construction, then turned to general transportation company. Suffering from a chronic deficit, this railway decided to operate steam locomotive usually in 1976.
Huge rice field, deep forest, and steam locomotive that threads its scenerycI guess over 90% of films or TV dramas set in pre-war period and feature the scene of railway use some of this companyfs station for shooting.
4 km walk from Shimada, you reach at Kanaya (‹à’J) shuku.
