Asian Plum Blossom Season is Coming Soon to Dazaifu!

January 11, 2012 - Asian Plum Blossom Season is Coming...

The Asian plum blossom season is coming soon to Dazaifu!   Dazaifu is famous for the Asian plum trees.  They bloom from mid-February to early March.  I am a Japanese who grew up in Fukuoka, but I have lived in the U.S. for decades.  Last year I had a chance to go back to Japan late February and to see the plum blossom at Dazaifu after many years' absence.

They were late in bloom last year for some reason (only 10-20% were in bloom ).  I hope they will be right on schedule this year.  The famous tree in front of the main shrine, "Tobi-Ume (Flying Plum Tree)", blooms ahead of all the other plum trees, usually in early February (in some years in late January).

Asian plum trees were introduced from China (Tang Dynasty) to Japan in the 8th century, and became the favorite of many Japanese artists - there are many ancient poems about plum blossoms written in 8-9th centuries.

This tree was only about in 1% bloom.

This plum blossom was on a rural road outside the Dazaifu shrine, but was in full bloom - I had to take a picture of it.

After viewing the blossom, let's go in one of the tea (rest) houses and enjoy sake with hot food.

Ume-ga-e-mochi (Plum-Tree-Branch rice cakes) are a must to have, too.  One of what I enjoy when I am back in Japan is that some coffee shops serve coffee in china like this (this was Wedgwood) - pretty incredible.
