A large variety of rail passes exists in Japan, providing unlimited travel in a certain area, or a round trip to plus unlimited travel in a given region. Some of the best rail passes available are introduced below:

Nationwide

JR Japan Rail Pass    click here for details
Type: Unlimited travel on almost all JR trains nationwide, including bullet trains, limited express trains, local trains, some JR buses and the JR ferry to Miyajima.
Duration: 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days
Conditions: Not available to residents of Japan. Must be purchased outside of Japan. Not transferable.

Type: Unlimited travel on local and rapid (kaisoku) JR trains nationwide.
Duration: Any 5 days within the period of validity.
Conditions: Only available seasonally. Can be shared by several people.

JR Shuyu Kippu   
Type: 1) A discounted round trip to one of over 35 zones in Japan and 2) unlimited travel on JR trains inside the zone.

Zones of particular interest include the Hokkaido Zone, the Keihanshin Zone around Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara, the Tokyo Zone, the Shikoku Zone and the Kyushu Zone.

Duration: 5 days unlimited travel inside the zone (10 day option available for the Hokkaido Zone). The duration of validity of the round trip ticket depends on the distance covered by it.
Conditions: The zone must be at least 200 kilometers from the departure station.
Price: The round trip is discounted by 20 percent, except if you use the Tokaido Shinkansen, in which case the discount will be 5 percent. The price for unlimited travel within the zone varies from 3,300 to 28,000 Yen, depending on the zone.
