How to travel between Hakodate and Sapporo
By train
Direct JR limited express trains, named "Hokuto" and "Super Hokuto" require about 3.5 hours for the journey between Hakodate and Sapporo. The one way fare is 8080 yen by non-reserved seat and around 8600 yen by reserved seat. There is roughly one connection per hour.
By bus
Hokkaido Chuo Bus, Donan Bus and Hokkaido Kotsu operate five daytime highway buses and one night bus per day between Hakodate and Sapporo. The one way journey takes 5.5 hours and costs 4,680 yen. Click here for more details.
By air
ANA and Hokkaido Air System, a member of the JAL Group, operate flights between Sapporo's Okadama Airport and Hakodate. The regular one way fare is about 15,000 yen, but discount tickets are usually available for less than 10,000 yen. The flight time is 45 minutes.
Not to be confused with Sapporo's larger Shin-Chitose Airport, Okadama Airport is located 30 minutes by bus (310 yen) outside of central Sapporo. Hakodate Airport can be reached in 20 minutes from the city center by bus (300 yen).
By car
The journey between Sapporo and Hakodate by car takes about four hours when using the Doo Expressway between Sapporo and its current terminus at Yakuho (will eventually be extended to Hakodate) and National Route #5 for the remaining 80 kilometers between Yakuho and Hakodate.

Central Hakodate with JR Hakodate Station, the old Motomachi district and Mount Hakodate are located on an distinctively shaped peninsula. The city is served by two tram lines and a bus network. A ropeway leads to the top of Mount Hakodate, which is also accessible by city bus.
Hakodate Airport is located about five kilometers east of the city center. Airport buses (by Hakodate Teisan Bus) operate every 20 minutes between Hakodate Station and the airport, taking 20 minutes and costing 300 yen for the one way journey, while less frequent city buses (by Hakodate Bus) do the journey in 30 minutes and for 280 yen one way.
Single rides on trams cost between 200 and 240 yen, depending on the distance traveled. A day pass for unlimited use of trams is available for 600 yen. A day pass for unlimited use of trams and Hakodate Bus buses (not including the Hakodate Teisan buses to the airport) is available for 1000 yen, while a 2-day pass for trams and Hakodate Bus buses costs 1700 yen.
