Japan, what an experience. My partner and I have just returned to Melbourne today after spending 10 days in Tokyo, Kyoto & Osaka. We had a great time in Japan and would love to return again. Anyone planning a trip should be prepared for crowds and to book ahead.
The Tokyo rail system is unbelievably reliable but can be a little confusing to begin with, Especially when trying to connect lines. The Yamanote line is very easy but trying to transfer within a station is daunting. I suggest if you are lost or need to look at a map find a rafter or pole to stand next to. We found Japanese people very kind and friendly and hotel staff exceptional. You must visit all the known areas of Tokyo, ie Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku etc.
Our only disappointment was Fuji Q Highlands theme park, if you must go make sure it is a pleasant day with no wind or rain otherwise they close all the rides and you waste your money (as we did) and, oh and go on a weekday not a weekend.
Kyoto is great for temples and food, please try to eat Japanese food as much as possible, it is not all raw fish. Find some Japanese friends through this website, they really added things to our trip besides being a tourist.
Try sake, go to the department stores (they are fantastic), allow time to walk and get lost (because you will get lost), give yourself rest times (you will need them), learn Japanese greetings and phrases to express thanks. Customer service standards are exceptional and if you are a smoker stick to the designated areas.
Osaka is not very tourist(English) friendly so be prepared. Allow some time to visit the 100 Yen Shop & the many beautiful gardens in Kyoto and Tokyo. Book a place in a tour group of the Kyoto Imperial Palace via the internet, before you depart.
Finally, Japan is not expensive, shopping is unlimited, don't eat burgers all the time, branch out, pointing and good manners will get you far in Japan. Be careful with sake it creeps up on you. Remember, just enjoy yourself and be amazed and all Japan is and has to offer.
