Travelling around Shikoku over 4 days 2013/3/3 14:50
hi (:

I'm heading down to shikoku from the 13th to the 17th, and I'm just wondering the best way to get around. I get to Takamatsu on the 13th, then going to Naoshima the next day, and want to end up in Matsuyama on the 16th.

Any pointers?
Thank you!

So on the 14th you're going to Naoshima - are you staying overnight? Where are you going on the 15th? Staying overnight in Matsuyama on the 16th? And where are you heading on the 17th? Is this part of a larger trip, or are you currently living in Japan? There are some rail passes available, but it depends where else you're going.

As for overnight in Matsuyama, here's a basic but unbelievably good value place across the road from Matsuyama-jo. http://www.sophia-club.net/guesthouse/gh_info.html

You didn't mention where you're coming from when accessing Shikoku. If you come from the mainland, then I HIGHLY recommend taking the ferry from Okayama to Naoshima, stay there a day and take the last ferry from Naoshima to Takamatsu.
From Takamatsu you can then move on to Matsuyama.

If you do not qualify for the Japan Railpass I suggest to use the bus. There is a highway bus running from Takamatsu to Matsuyama, something like 2.5 hours. Send me a mail in case you need more info klausdorth(at)web.de. You also did not mention what you want to do or see. Some more info would definitely be helpful!

If you are a good walker, you might hope to visit Kotohiragu Shrine known as Konpirasan in Kagawa Prefecture.

When I went to Shikoku last time
: I quickly toured Takamatsu in Kagawa on a rental bicycle (rented after I filled an application form).
: I toured Matsuyama in Ehime, visiting Matsuyama Castle, Dogo Onsen area and so on.
: I made a side trip to Kotohira in Kagawa, where I visited Kotohiragu Shrine, climbing up to Main Hall via staircases of 785 steps.

thanks everyone!
i:m getting the ferry from kobe, cheap.
well to be honest I haven:t really got many plans apart from seeing Ritsurin koen in Takamatsu and the castle in Matsuyama, and Naoshima. Just sort of gonna go with the flow, seems like the thing to do in Shikoku.

I suggest you have a look at the Shikoku page (http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1107.html) and see what else takes your fancy. I second the suggestion of Kotohira, and I'd also suggest a visit to Uchiko. There are other original castles at Uwajima, Marugame and Kochi by the way. I liked Kochi-jo the most because even though it was small, it has an open area at the top which gives you a great outlook. The Iya Valley was brilliant, but we rented a car due to poor public transport. I doubt that'd be best given your period of time and desire for a budget trip. There's plenty to see otherwise, and Shikoku Mura at Takamatsu can give you an insight of the vine bridges that are at Iya Valley too.
