Can I rent equipment/climb Mt Fuji in 1 day 2013/4/13 04:40
I have limited time in Japan. I would like to get to Mt. Fuji late the evening before and get the equipment and climb to the summit and return the equipment in the same day. Unfortunately, we can't do sunrise.

There are two options (and numerous routes) for climbing Mt. Fuji:
1) Climb half of Fuji, taking a bus/car to drive up to the fifth station.
2) Actually climb all of Fuji by starting at the foot of the mountain.

If you are in good shape, accustomed to hiking at higher altitudes, and the weather is cooperative, option 1 can be done in one day. The challenge might be coordinating bus arrival/departure times and hiking duration so that everything aligns with your schedule.

The second option is also feasible in one day, but only if you have good endurance and can climb relatively quickly. It doesn't sound like you have much wiggle room, so this option is not recommended.

I've never rented equipment in Japan, so I can't give many details. There are companies that allow you to order rental items online, and then mail them to you. To return the equipment, you can go to a convenience store (generally open 24 hrs) to ship them back. Please note that these transactions and information will mostly likely be in Japanese.

I think there are physical stores in Tokyo that rent equipment, but the potential downside is that you would have to return everything during business hours.

Hello and thanks. I won't be going back to Tokyo, so returning at a convience store may be an option. If you know of a website, please let me know. I will be staying one day in downtown Tokyo for a night.

The following site seems to have a clear catalogue and transaction procedure: http://www.yamarent.com/

This company allows online (shopping cart system) and phone orders. For rental periods of two days/one night, they send your equipment to you three days ahead of time so that you can test the fit of clothing. (Japanese hotels are pretty good about receiving and keeping packages for you, if you notify them ahead of time.) Returns after the trip or to exchange sizes can be done at convenience stores, free of charge.

The prices are a bit steep, but not notably different from other rental outfits. If you already own items like rainwear and fleece jackets, you can save a good amount of money by using those instead.

I don't know how much Japanese you can read, so here are links to packages that might suit your needs -- the detail pages have images clearly showing what each set contains:

Men's complete Mt. Fuji set (five- and six-set options):

Men's two-item set (choose the two items you need):
http://www.yamarent.com/item/list/choice2_male

Men's three-item set (choose the three items you need): http://www.yamarent.com/item/list/choice3_male

The company's phone number is in the top right hand corner, in a green box.

I rented from kobe outdoor, it was very good gear and easy return because you can always ask for help to people where you stay.
The web site is in japanese but you can call or email them in english. There is a lady called akiko, she speaks good english and very helpful.
