Kamikochi transport from Matsumoto 2013/4/14 03:47
Hi, I am planning possible trip to Kamikochi on 20 April. Will the bus between Matsumoto and Kamikochi be operating?

Can you tell me the level of snow there now as I am thinking of walking along the river to enjoy the scenery.

Is there any accommodation that is already open to book?

Yes, buses and trains will start running on April 19 when Kamikochi opens this year:

There does not seem to be too much snow in the town left even now. Here is a live camera:

Of course, the surrounding mountains are still under deep layers of snow, though.

Thanks Uji for the helpful information. How about accommodation - I understand the accommodation in Kamikochi is on the high side. Is it worth staying a night there or rather I do it as a day trip from Matsumoto? thanks a bunch!

I think this depends on what the purpose of your visit to Kamikochi will be. If it is just to take pictures at Kappabashi, do a quick stroll around the lower hiking paths, and/or enjoy one of the onsen, then a day trip may be sufficient. If you want to do longer hikes or simply want more time to quietly enjoy the nature of the area without hordes of tourists milling about, an overnight stay may be better.
