No chance in Tokyo. Go to northern Tohoku area like Iwate. They are at full blooms.

No need to head north specially. If you go to Shinjuku Gyoen in Tokyo, there are still many late-blooming varieties to be enjoyed usually up until around the end of April. There is more to cherry blossom than just the popular somei-yoshino variety.

Thanks a lot for your replies. So I will try Shinjuku first.

This year was not a usual year. The trees followed a much faster pace than usually. Accordingly, most of the late-blooming varieties were reported to approach the end of their blooming season around April 18 already. On the 24th, I am afraid all that was left among the flowering cherry trees were probably a couple of kiku-zakura trees, which are difficult to find and recognize as cherry trees as their blossoms are almost hidden by the fully developed leaves.

For cherry blossoms, the Tohoku Region is now the recommended destination.

We went to Shinjuku Gyoen garden and indeed that was not impressive. Single trees in bloom and flowers were hidden in leaves. So we will follow the other suggestion and and we are going to Kitakami tomorrow. Thanks to all for response.
