Colorful leaves and Okama crater in Zao

I plan to visit Zao in late Oct. What is the best way both to see colorful leaves and to have a good view of Okama crater? By Ropeway or by car? I plan to go from Yamagata or any other better suggestion?
Could you suggest cost for one-day car rental (automatic car for 4 people) in Japan?

bus better.
(no transfer from JR Yamagata stn/Zao onsen)
If very very good weather (fine and not strong wind)
ride Ropeway from Zao onsen then about 60min walk not difficult
but around Okama not confortable under 10/50F.
