Late July Hokkaido

Hi all, I'll be visiting Hokkaido from July 20th to 28th.
My Itinerary is:
Day 1 (Saturday) : Sapporo Day 2 (Sunday) : Sapporo, buy JR tickets for Otaru, Asahiyama Zoo, Furano, Noboribetsu. Day 3 (Monday): Otaru, visit Otaru Canal, Music Box Museum. Day 4 (Tuesday): Asahikawa, Get on the special Asahiyama Zoo train to the Zoo. Eat Asahikawa Ramen, stay at Asahikawa. Day 5 (Wednesday): Take JR to Biei- Furano. Lavender twinkle bus tours. Return to Sapporo from Furano. Day 6 (Thursday): Noboribetsu Onsen day trip, JR package 5800 yen. Day 7 (Friday): Sapporo, Fireworks Day 8 (Saturday): Sapporo Day 9 (Sunday): Late afternoon flight back.
Well that's about it. Hope someone can advise me whether: 1) My schedule is too packed? 2) Should I stay a night at Asahikawa or return back to Sapporo and go to Furano from Sapporo the next day? * My lodging, breakfast and dinner in Sapporo for 9 days have already been paid for beforehand. 3) Is it better to get a Hokkaido Rail Pass or should I go with the JR return packages on offer (i.e. 1500yen Otaru pass, 5900 yen asahikawa zoo pass, 5400 yen furano pass, 5800 yen noboribetsu pass)?
I'm not sure because the passes are for unreserved seats, whereas the Hokkaido Rail Pass includes free seat reservations.
Are seat reservations actually necessary during this period? I have only 2 in my party.
