Hiroshima-Matsue by coast rail 2013/7/9 16:35
Hello
I am struggling in Hyperdia to find a rail schedule that will hug the coast down to Shimonoseki (or thereabouts) and then hug the coast up to Matsue. We love train travel and I can see a railway line on my map but I think I am not putting the right "destinations" or "passes" into Hyperdia to bring it up. I don't want to go inland via Ato.

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me!
We dont yet know where we will get on/off but any secret spots along the coast to Matsue would be much appreciated.

You can take the san-in line all the way, although I think you may have to transfer at least once at Matsuda. If you use a limited express or aqua liner the trip will take 6-7 hours and costs about 8000 yen max.

Izumo Taisha and Hagi come to mind.

The Aqua-Liner is probably your best bet for ocean views and not too many stops, though it is certainly not the most direct. I believe it terminates in Masuda, so you would have to take a different line to Masuda from Hiroshima. If you have the time to spend on this, then stopping by Izumo Taisha is highly recommended. Ride the Aqua-Liner (or a local line) to JR Izumo, then visit the shrine, and maybe take an extra 45 minutes to walk to the beach (Inasa-no-hama) and back. If you like kabuki, you could visit Izumo-no-Okuni's grave on the way.
(More info about Izumo Taisha and Inasa-no-hama here: http://www.japanesemythology.jp/izumo-taisha/)

After that, you could take the Ichibata Railway along the north bank of Lake Shinji to Matsue Shinji-ko Onsen Station. This is line is one that people would ride for train nostalgia. There is no line going along the Sea of Japan on the Shimane Peninsula (Izumo and Matsue), but the Lake Shinji views are quite good, too. There is also a free foot onsen at the last station.

The most direct would be taking the "Grand Arrow" highway bus run by the Ichibata and Hiroden companies: http://www.ichibata.co.jp/bus/highway/hirosima.html

If time is of the essense, the "Mikoto" bus (http://www.ichibata.co.jp/bus/highway/hirosima2.html) could take you to Izumo, and you could just ride the Ichibata line to Matsue when you're done there.

Enjoy your time in Matsue!

One of the best ocean views (or "sea" views) I've seen in Japan was on the train from Izumo to Oda. Oda serves Iwami Ginzan, the former silver mines that are now a World Heritage Site.

Izumo and Oda are both nice stops.
