Beppu one day? 2013/7/23 10:01
Hi guys,

planning to do a one day trip from Fukuoka to Beppu. Will I have enough time to visit all the Jigoku and have a bath in one onsen there? Departing early at morning and coming back to Fukuoka at late afternoon or evening.

Thanks

When you get to Beppu Station, go to the tourist information center and book your bus tour of the "Hells". Try to go as early in the morning, so that you can make the morning tour. The final stop of the bus tour is one of the hot springs, so it will take you there, and you are suppplied with a bus pass to get back to the station.

One thing I would suggest is taking headphones with you on the tour, noise cancelling ones if you have them. The tour guide will talk almost continously in Japanese on the tour bus, and foreign tourssts are supplied with a "Pamplet" and a wand which has some ear buds. You will touch the wand to the locations on the map, and you will hear what the tour guide is describing to the Japanese tourists. You will be using this wand while the tour guide is talking, so it's better if you have some way to isolate yourself, such as the headphones. The headphones are also great on the flight to and from Japan. I also know that at least one theater in Huis Ten Bosch has audio boxes with several langage options at every seat that you cna plug into.

You can go through the Hells tour in about 2.5-3 hours, and not even rush through. 3 of the 8 places are next door to each other in fact.
You can see a good preview of them at

There are numerous onsen all over, so take your pick.
If you want more ideas, look into going up Mt. Tsurumi - if the weather is good the view of the whole Beppu bay is marvelous. Another possibility is the monkey park in Takasakiyama.

If you've never been to one, it is quite enjoyable and a rare experience.

Is there any website of this Hell Tours in English ? How long is each tour, time of tours and price ? Wonder if it is faster to visit on my own if I just select 4 or 5 ?

It's doable as there are many trains each way. I am planning to do it with Aso.

These sites have info on Beppu:

http://www.beppu-jigoku.com/images/English.pdf

For the hells, you can easily walk to 6 of the 8. If you are short on time, you could skip the rest. You really don't need a bus tour to take you there. But look into getting a discount book of tickets for the places at Beppu Stn in the tourist info office - a good money saver.
