best way from Takayama to Matsumoto

I am going to visit Takayama 11/10 - 13/10, and then want to go to Matsumoto for two nights, as hotel in Kamikochi Vally (near the bus stop) is extremely expensive. (I will then go for one day from Matsumoto to Kamikochi and back).
What is the best way to go with public transportation from Takayama to Matsumoto (center of town) ? Any way to use JR pass ?

By JR from Takayama to Matsumoto it is about 4.5 to 5.5 hrs with 1-2 transfers. You can use the JR rail pass on it.
Since you intend to visit Kamikochi, consider taking bus from Takayama to Kamikochi (with a transfer in Hirayu Onsen) and after Kamikochi continue by bus (with a train transfer in Shin-Shimashima) to Matsumoto. But you have to pay separately as the rail pass is not valid on this route.
