Onsen resorts around Fukuoka 2013/9/25 14:25
I am going to be traveling on a tight schedule in a few weeks and was wondering if there were any nice onsen resorts, where they had a nice option of springs, meals, etc. that weren't too far from Fukuoka. Beppu and the like would be a little bit out of the question as my schedule is incredibly tight. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Thanks!

An overnight stay at a ryokan is necessary to fully appreciate onsen. My top recommendation is Kurokawa, which is has a direct bus connection from Fukuoka (2.5 hours, 3000 yen one way):

If time is tight and you can't go far, you might try the Futsukaichi area - while not the most famous, it is one of the oldest, going back over 1300 years. There is some info at:

The area is also very close to Dazaifu, which has a very famous shrine and historical area.

If you want to stay a night, then one of the better nearby places is Kyukamura, on Shikanoshima, with a wonderful ocean view.
See:

Shikanoshima also has many interesting historic places and good hiking.
