Can I know the best way to purchase the tickets so I can be as cost effective as possible?Your options are explained here: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e6027.htmlDoing the entire journey by bus is going to be cheap and slow. Using the shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagano is going to be fast and expensive. Is there any pass I can buy that maximize my travelling options? No, I can'tthink of any. should I buy a passmo or ticket by ticket or any pass that can be used on all trains?Pasmo cannot be used for the trip to Yudanaka.

You can save some money by getting the JR Kanto area pass which can be used on the shinkansen from Tokyo to Saku-Daira. From there you will need to buy regular tickets to cover the rest of the journey to Yudanaka. The pass can again be used on your return from Saku-Daira to Tokyo.
