It looks like the JR Pass id the way to go, but I am wondering what the travel time is from Kagoshima to Sapporo without stopping, and what would be the extra costs of the night trains and any other costs Im not aware of.

By air cheaper and fast via KIX or other airport.
No direct flight and train for Hokkaido(Sapporo) from Kagoshima.

FUK(Fukuoka/Hakata) to CTS(Sapporo) also fast way.
