How long does the train journey from Kyoto to Yufuin(Kyushu) take ?Is such a journey possible on a JR train Pass? and how may changes would I have to make to get to Yufuin? thank you

Yes. Take the shinkansen to Hakata. Once there, there are several routes you can take to Yufuin but the best is the Yufuin no Mori; it's a stylish train inside and out.

Yes you can, with a minimum of 1 change. Depending on the time you may need to change twice, but doesn't significantly lengthen the trip.
Yufuin is very quiet and even languid though. It has some good hiking. If you want to see a bit more activity, then you might also consider seeing Beppu. It's Hells Tour is quite famous and there is a good monkey park there. See:

One of the best onsen experiences though is in Kurokawa in Kumamoto.
