Transport mode suggestion for Hokkaido 2014/3/14 20:19
I'm planning to go Hokkaido from 25/Jul/2014 ~ 2/Aug/2014. There is only 2 of us, and we plan to cover the below area :
1. Sapporo
2. Otaru
3. Furano, Biei, Ashikawa (northern route)
4. Boboribetsu, Toyoko, Hakodate (Southern route)

Which options is cheaper?
Opt1 : Rental-a-car (cover No.4 & 5 route for about 5~6days)+ Day pass to Otaru
Opt2 : take the 7day Hokkaido Rail Pass?
or any other cheaper options can suggest to me?

1 and 2 can be explored with train

3. car will be more convenient

4. Can be done either car or train but I opted train to avoid drop off fee and having to concentrate on driving.

Thx guear for the suggestion.

I have the same opinion on Route 1, 2 & 3.

And i shall look into Train option for route 4.
Does anyone know any great train deals for Sapporo-Noribetsu-tokako-hakodate-Sapporo?

I would suggest flying in or out of hakodate to save time and possibly money.

If you complete sapporo-hakodate between 3 days, 3days hokkaido pass might be good value
http://www2.jrhokkaido.co.jp/global/english/railpass/rail01.html

Sapporo-hakodate one way cost about 8000yen. If your original plane ticket is refundable and you can rebook it to fly out of hakodate for less than that, you might actually save money.

Thx Guear for the tips, but i bought the flight tickets from ANA Experience Japan Fare and it is not permitted to change routing.

however, if i took the 3day train pass back-and-forth Sapporo-Hakodate, it will be the same cost right?
