Tokyo-Takayama-Kanazawa-Osaka?

Hi, We will be traveling with the JR pass and I was wondering if it was feasible to do a Tokyo - Takayama - Kanazawa - Osaka trip in a day? We would leave from Tokyo early and it doesn't really matter if we arrive to Osaka late. Or should we plan to spend the night at Kanazawa? Any insight would be much appreciated!

It is theoretically possible, but you will have virtually no time for sightseeing. This is how the day could look like:
Take a local train to Shin-Yokohama before 6am 06:00 depart Shin-Yokohama by Hikari 07:26 arrive Nagoya 07:45 depart Nagoya by Hida limited express 10:02 arrive Takayama
12:50 depart Takayama by non-JR bus (3390 yen one way) 15:05 arrive Kanazawa OR 13:15 depart Takayama by JR train via Toyama 15:45 arrive Kanazawa
20:35 depart Kanazawa by Thunderbird limited express 23:12 arive Osaka
Note that many sights in Kanazawa will close soon after your arrival in the city. Kenrokuen is open until 18:00.
Definitely not recommended to the average tourist!

You only have 2 hours in Takayama, there are many places you can visit in Takayama as well as Kanazawa. You can consider to stay in Takayama one night and do a day trip to Shirakawago (if you want) then move on to Kanazawa for a night. Or stay in Takayama and do a day trip to Kanazawa then move on to Osaka the next day. Shirakawago http://whenshetravelstheworld.blogspot.sg/2013/12/japans-golden-route-...

Thank you very much for the advice. We unfortunately only have one day to kill. As a last question, would you recommend Kanazawa or Takayama?
