We stayed in Takayama 1 night, Shirakawago 1 night then Kanazawa 1 night before we moved on to Kyoto. If you want to do the same like what I did, try to arrive Takayama early morning so you can do a bit of visit (morning market) in Takayama the next day before you leave to Shirakawago. Sun set early during winter and I guess it should be at 530pm (you gotta check) in end Nov. So you should try to reach Shirakawago by 12pm and you still have quite a bit of time to visit the little village. Dusk is the best time to take photo in this village when all gassho house lights on. You can take 10am bus to Kanazawa the next day. You can also do a day trip to Shirakawago from Kanazawa or Takayama, takes you an hour bus ride only. If you can, spend a night in Shirakawago. It's once in a life time experience to stay in one of the farmhouse. My mother and auntie at age of 60 enjoy a lot.
If you want me to choose either Takayama or Kanazawa, my vote would be Takayama.
