best time for koyo in Shiretoko peninsula 2014/4/8 14:34
Our family of 4 plans to do the Shiretoko area and Daisetsuzan Nat park first half of October for about 12/13 days.Am wondering if its too late to catch koyo in Shiretoko.
Can you please advise the best route to take.we intend to drive. Also is it better to fly to Mombetsu or Asahikawa?
Looking forward to some response!
Thanks

Hi.

If it is every year, the best season of autumn leaves is up to mid-October from early October.

If you go to Shiretoko, it is preferable to use the Monbetsu Airport.
I think until Shiretoko from Monbetsu Airport, and takes about 5 hours by car.
However, I think until Shiretoko from Asahikawa Airport, and takes about six hours by car.

Hi, Sharan,

Thanks for the info.We will plan accordingly.Should we worry about bear encounters in the 5 lakes area?Any special place in Shiretoko we must not miss? And can you enlighten us about the autumn festival in Sapporo?

Thanks again,
evelyn

Hi,

I think that I can have a wonderful experience when I go to the Lake Shiretoko five for me.
It is the place that is very famous in Japan.

It is from May like the end of July in the season of the bear.
I think that it is all right if it is October that I go to Shiretoko, butc

I checked an autumn festival of Sapporo, but seem to hold it in September.
There is no event plan in particular in October.

In Daisetsuzan National Park we enjoyed beautiful autumn foliage in Sounkyo Gorge and early Oct is a very good time for it. If you can be there late Sept you can even go for Ginsendai and Daisetsu Kogen which are 2 popular koyo sites that have the earliest autumn colour in Japan.

We could explore the Shiretoko Five Lakes on our own when we were there in 2009 but nowadays there are more restrictions.

Shiretoko Peninsula has a lot to offer. We had 2 full days there and still had not seen all we want to see. Take a look at the last post on the following thread for some listed websites on Shiretoko.

Bear encounters in the Shiretoko 5 lakes area ? 2014/4/10 10:52

Should we worry about bear encounters in the 5 lakes area?

We visited Shiretoko Five Lakes a few years ago. We were also a bit apprehensive about the story of bears, hence wore "bear bells" during the visit. I noticed many others were also carrying "bear bells". Unsure if it was due to the " bear bells" , we saw no bears.

Seeing Sapporo being mentioned, are you going there during your 12-13 days!? If so, consider going there in the latter half of your trip. Mid Oct is autumn foliage season in that part of Hokkaido. A side trip to Jozankei and especially the Houheikyou Dam is highly worthwhile for beautiful koyo.
