I found that if you try to get a wi2 u300 through the japanese version of the wi2 site you can sign up for very cheaply to get wi2 at a monthly rate. Has anyone visiting japan ever signed up for the monthly u300 wi2 plan, and if so, anything to be aware of? thanks!

So you don't need a router or anything, you can just sign up on the Japanese version of the site and travel around and that's that?

With Wi2 or WIMAX? Actually, depending on your device, you probably don't need a router or extra hardware to use either. Wi2 are paid wifi hotspots so you'll need to be physically near one of their locations to use it. There's tons of them around, especially in the urban centers. WIMAX is more like cellular based internet, but you're device (most likely a laptop) will have to support it or you'll need an external modem.
