Cell phone internet surfing? 2014/4/17 11:00
What's the most convenient way to use google map in Japan?

Free wifi available?

Do not want to pay much for the service.

I am from Hong Kong.

Well, what counts as "not much" to you ? Free wifi is of course not available everywhere. If you want your Google Maps anywhere, the cheapest option is probably a pre-paid data SIM from b-mobile or econnect. I've heard there are also some maps apps (other than Google's) which work offline.

Actually that's an extremely good rate for a smartphone rental. Of course, depending on your needs there are ways to do it for less, but I wouldn't be upset at that rate if that is what you needed.

I will be in Japan for 2 weeks. Can I purchase a pre-paid sim card with data plan for my iphone 4S? Or do I have to rent a local iphone?

yes, assuming your phone is unlocked.

Pocket wifi would probably be the best option. It saves you the hassle of dealing with sim compatibility. You can just login to the wifi with your phone and you're friends can signin to the same wifi as well.

The thing is, it's a little pricey and since you're only here for 2 weeks, you'll probably have to pay by the day. I think it's around 1000 yen per day. But if you're with friends, you could also split the cost. Don't quote me on that though.
