Kyoto - temple fatigue

I have one free day in Kyoto and would like to spend it in a natural setting, possibly on a hike and seeing local birds. Aside from the well known tourist sites, is there anywhere to go outside the city to breath some fresh air and get some exercise? Like a hill to climb or a lake to walk around?

Lake Biwa is close enough to Kyoto, and you can walk along it pretty much anywhere. You may be interested in taking a boat to Chikubushima, an island in the center of the lake. Miyama is a nice idea, as well. Amanohashidate and/or Ine are nice also if you are "templed out". Hiking to the Takeda Castle Ruins is nice: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/a40e1/22ac4a/Takatori in Nara also has a nice hike to the castle ruins. There are many temples that are good for hiking, but since your title is "templed out", I didn't mention them.
