Kyoto - temple fatigue 2014/4/23 01:05
I have one free day in Kyoto and would like to spend it in a natural setting, possibly on a hike and seeing local birds. Aside from the well known tourist sites, is there anywhere to go outside the city to breath some fresh air and get some exercise? Like a hill to climb or a lake to walk around?

I would recommend Fushimi Inari Taishi:

Or if you're looking for something more rural or natural then maybe check out Miyama:

Mt. Daimonji is a nice forest hike with views over the city at the top. Follow the directions to Ginkakuji in northern Kyoto:

The hike starts a short walk away.

There's also Kurama Onsen, which is a lovely hot spring in a forest setting:

You could hike from there to Kibune to complete the day.

Lake Biwa is close enough to Kyoto, and you can walk along it pretty much anywhere.

You may be interested in taking a boat to Chikubushima, an island in the center of the lake.

Miyama is a nice idea, as well.

Amanohashidate and/or Ine are nice also if you are "templed out".

Hiking to the Takeda Castle Ruins is nice:

Takatori in Nara also has a nice hike to the castle ruins.

There are many temples that are good for hiking, but since your title is "templed out", I didn't mention them.

Takeda Castle Ruins, that's exactly the type of thing I'm looking for! Thanks
