Getting Suica Card With Bigger Bills 2014/4/24 02:42
Sorry if it's a dumb question but, do the vending machines that sell suica give you change back?

For example, I wanna purchase 3000 yen worth suica, can I put in a 10000 yen bill and get change back or do I have to pay the exact amount?

Thanks..

You can select 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, 10,000 YEN Suica charges on the Machine. If you want to charge 3000 YEN on your Suica card, select 3000 YEN and pay 10,000 YEN. You will be changed 7000 YEN back. Your Suica can be deposited max 20,000 YEN.

You can't be charged via credit cards unless you have a View credit card which is an affiliated credit company of JR east.

A huge advantage of Japan train ticket vending machines is that you can use the largest bill you have to buy the smallest ticket they sell.

Japan is a cash economy for tourists, so most begin their holiday with a wallet full of \10,000 notes. Suica recharge ATMs are a great way of turning these into smaller notes, whilst keeping your Suica topped up. I found the Metro ATMs to often be a bit less busy than those at the overground stations, should anyone be nervous about using them for the first time. Don't worry: they are very easy to use. Just press the 'English' button first and you are sorted. There are video walk-throughs on YouTube.

I have visited Japan regularly since 1995 and 20 000 yen is the most I have brought with me from home.
Once in Japan I use credit cards for hotels and bigger expenses, cash from a bank ATM for small purchases like snacks, newspapers, entrance fees to shrines etc.

The Japanese do use credit cards...including multi-use credit cards that are a combination credit card + a Suica transit pass + an electronic purse for small purchases etc.
