Kurobe Alpine route with car

Hello, We will be driving for 24 days in Japan in October. Can I park the car in Tateyama and join the tour and return in same day to Tateyama? I do not intend to travel the whole journey to Omachi as we have been there last June to Matusumoto, Nagano and Hakuba etc. We will stop half way and return. Please advise what will be the best station to stop and turn back.

Can I park the car in Tateyama and join the tour and return in same day to Tateyama?Join what tour? If you join a tour, then it would obviously depend on the program of that tour. If you explore the Alpine Route on your own, it is completely up to you how far along the route you want to travel and how much time you want to spend at each place. How much you will be able to see in a single day depends on how early you arrive in Tateyama. But if you arrive early, you could easily go at least as far as Murodo and back in a single day. Also going to Kurobe Dam and back should be possible. Here is the timetable: http://www.alpen-route.com/en/transportation/timetable-faresOn busy days there can be delays.

Uji-san,
Again thank you.
No. I intend to park the car at the station and go as far as Murudo and back . If times allowed , I will go to Kurobe Dam .
I plan to stay 2 nights in Tateyama, first night arriving Tateyama after touring Toyoma, overnight at Tetayama and get up early for the Alpine route and stay another night in Tateyama. I presume it will be enough to go to Kurobe Dam then? Is parking facility available I the staion area and how much wil be the charge?

I presume it will be enough to go to Kurobe Dam then?Yes, if you have two days along the route, that is ample of time. If you travel at a relatively fast pace (and it is not too crowded), you could even do Tateyama-Dam-Tateyama in a single day. Is parking facility available I the staion area and how much wil be the charge?Yes, there are several free parking lots around Tateyama Station: http://www.alpen-route.com/access/access/access04.html

Uji-san,
One more question: Can we drive from Tateyama to Kurobe Gorge or we have to take public transport? Do you have map code for the dam? Thank you.

Uji-san, Thank you.
I am quite aware that the gorge is different from the dam location.
I am however not aware that one cant drive to the dam.
From which points do I break off for the Dam on the Alpine road if I go only as far as Murodo?
