Tourist spots from Chitose to Hakodate

My friend and I plan to drive from Chitose Airport to Hakodate. We have 6 days. We plan to spend 3 nites at Hakodate. Could you please recommend the places of interest worth stopping and where we could stop for the night along the drive? We are budget travellers, any 3 star accommodation would you suggest? Thanks in advance.

We're doing the same thing in September and haven't found many attractions on the direct path from Chitose to Hakodate. We're driving West toward Mt Yotei then South, bypassing Lake Toya. We're driving to Noborebitsu the following day so plan on seeing the Toya area then.

We're also planning not driving on the motorway and taking the side roads, especially on the coast of Uchiura Bay. It'll take longer but it'll be a lot more interesting, which is the point of driving for us. It's the journey as well as the destination.

We'll also make some detours to check out michinoeki's along the way.
