First in japan, some questions 2014/6/25 21:29
Hey. I'll make my first trip to Japan, and have some questions. Sorry if my english is not the best.

1: The flight lands 23:00 last train leaves 00:10. I will I even have time to pick out JRpass, bags and find everything in that time?

2: Will be in Japan 21 days from 07-26 to 08-15. What's not to miss? Has JRpass for 7 days. Will go to Koto and Mt.Fuji and visit most of the major areas of Tokyo.

3: Budget for each day 9000YEN should go to travel, admission, food and shoping. Will I do well on it or do I need saving? How to keep your money safe will have almost everything in cash. Is it safe to have them at the hotel room?

4: Something you should think about or to know about the Japanese?

You should have plenty of time to get your luggage, go through customs and immigration and catch a train, but you definitely won't be able to exchange your JR Pass on that day because the exchange offices at the airports will have closed already. You'll have to get them then next day. What airport are you flying into and where are you staying that first night?

2: Will be in Japan 21 days from 07-26 to 08-15. What's not to miss? Has JRpass for 7 days. Will go to Koto and Mt.Fuji and visit most of the major areas of Tokyo.

How many people? Does that include airfare? What types of accommodation do you prefer?

How to keep your money safe will have almost everything in cash. Is it safe to have them at the hotel room?

Generally it will be safe. The biggest worry will be if you lose it.

4: Something you should think about or to know about the Japanese?

Travelling around Japan is easier than you might think.

I just want to make sure you're aware that the 7day pass is for 7 consecutive days, meaning you'll be without the use of that pass for the other 14. Plan your trips within that 7 day window.

Something you should think about or know about the Japanese?

Major railroad stations in Tokyo Metropolis, Kyoto City, etc. have signs in English.
Also trains on some basic routes have clear recorded voice announcement in English.

Some transfers (= changing lines) in subways are long and/or complicated, but station codes, line symbol colors + letters and description of train directions may well help you to reach a correct platform.

Will you fly into Haneda Airport [HND, Tokyo International Airport]?

If your flight happens to be delayed, you may miss the last train; but there is at least one hotel near HND offering shuttle buses from HND International Terminal until later than 00:30.

(I know there are two hotels located inside two HND Domestic Terminals and at least two other hotels offering shuttle buses, but the last free-of-fee connection to each of them is only before 00:15.)

Will be in Japan 21 days from 07-26 to 08-15.

It will be muggy in many places during these three weeks; knowing some brands of sport drinks (containing sodium ions [Na+]) may help you.

Has JR pass for 7 days. Will go to Kyoto and Mt. Fuji and visit most of the major areas of Tokyo.

If you fly into Haneda Airport [HND] and fly out from Kansai Airport [KIX] after visiting Kyoto, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass is not likely to pay off in these trips only.

JR companies are not operating any subway lines. Some major tourist spots in Tokyo are better accessed by non-JR bus and/or railroad (including subway) lines.
Foreign visitors can choose a subway pass which can be used on both Toei and Tokyo Metro subway lines; whether this pass pays off or not depends on starting + ending points, destinations and traveling paces.

When you pay regular railroad fares in urban areas, an IC transportation card can be useful.
Please check "Basic Use" in the following article.

What's not to miss?

That may depend on your interests and preferences.

During August 9 - 12 of 2014, gaps in tides will be large; you may have a chance in Miyajima Island to watch different scenes of Itsukushima Shrinefs Grand Torii Gate, which vary depending on sea water levels. Unless a weather is expected to be too bad, I can recommend visiting Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (after the annual ceremony on August 6) and Miyajima Island around August 10 of 2014.

Re: First in japan, some questions 2014/6/28 09:31
Thank you so much that you take the time to help me. Great information!

We land at Haneda Airport and we'll stay at a hotel near Tokyo Station.
So have to get us there. But we should keep up. if we do not have to get out JRpass same day. Just thought I had to pick it up at once. Will check with the buses, if the flight would be late.

Home, we will fly from Narita Airport. Thought use JRpass last week.

Journeys planned with JRpass:
Kyoto and back (maybe more than a trip here)
Mt.Fuji and back
Narita
And more, want to see a lot of natural and old Japanese buildings, etc.
From what i look up only kyoto trip cost the same as the pass.

We are two but we have 9k each. Flights already paid. Hotel is already booked and paid. A bit boring maybe we're stuck in a hotel during the entire time. But it was cheap so therefore it was the same hotel.

Will go through all the information and try to plan the trip a little beter.

Thank you again! great help

Re: First in japan, some questions 2014/6/28 13:49
If your flight leaves Narita after about 2PM you can use your JR Pass, leave from Kyoto on the Shinkansen and change to the NEX (Narita Express) at Shinagawa station in Tokyo.
I made that trip in April. I left Kyoto at 08:29 and arrived in Narita at 12:58. While changing trains at Shinagawa there was plenty of time to buy a Bento to eat on the NEX train.
