Something you should think about or know about the Japanese? Major railroad stations in Tokyo Metropolis, Kyoto City, etc. have signs in English.
Also trains on some basic routes have clear recorded voice announcement in English.
Some transfers (= changing lines) in subways are long and/or complicated, but station codes, line symbol colors + letters and description of train directions may well help you to reach a correct platform.

If your flight happens to be delayed, you may miss the last train; but there is at least one hotel near HND offering shuttle buses from HND International Terminal until later than 00:30.

Will be in Japan 21 days from 07-26 to 08-15. It will be muggy in many places during these three weeks; knowing some brands of sport drinks (containing sodium ions [Na+]) may help you.

Fuji and visit most of the major areas of Tokyo. If you fly into Haneda Airport [HND] and fly out from Kansai Airport [KIX] after visiting Kyoto, a 7-day Japan Rail Pass is not likely to pay off in these trips only.
JR companies are not operating any subway lines. Some major tourist spots in Tokyo are better accessed by non-JR bus and/or railroad (including subway) lines.
Foreign visitors can choose a subway pass which can be used on both Toei and Tokyo Metro subway lines; whether this pass pays off or not depends on starting + ending points, destinations and traveling paces.
When you pay regular railroad fares in urban areas, an IC transportation card can be useful.
Please check "Basic Use" in the following article.

During August 9 - 12 of 2014, gaps in tides will be large; you may have a chance in Miyajima Island to watch different scenes of Itsukushima Shrinefs Grand Torii Gate, which vary depending on sea water levels. Unless a weather is expected to be too bad, I can recommend visiting Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park (after the annual ceremony on August 6) and Miyajima Island around August 10 of 2014.
