Is JR East Pass worth 2014/7/5 09:34
Hi guys,
We will be in Japan for 10days.
Visiting Hakone, Kamakura, Nikko and areas around Tokyo, such as shinjuku, shibuya, ueno etc.
Is JR East pass worth it? Can we use JR East pass from Narita airport to Hakone?
Will appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers.

The JR East Pass will only get you as far as Odawara, and not by Shinkansen. The trains past this to Hakone are the Odakyu Line and not JR.

Just traveling around Tokyo, I don't think you'd add up to the Y22,000 the 5-day pass costs. If you were using the northbound Shinkansen to Niigata, Nagano, and north toward Aomori, it would pay for itself.

If you're talking about the 3-day Y8,300 Kanto Area Pass, you could use that if you were on the train a lot. The N'EX into Tokyo is Y1500 with a tourist discount but would only get you as far as Ofuna toward Hakone. The 3-day Kanto Pass would get you to Odawara. From Odawara, you transfer to the Odakyu Line.

You can check your train fares on hyperdia.com and see how they add up. The Tobu Line to Nikko and the Keisei Line from Narita into Ueno are cheaper than the JR if you don't get a pass.
