How to get from Odawara to Sounzan 2014/7/22 12:13
Hello, we are travelling from Tokyo to stay in Gora Hanaougi near Sounzan for 1 night. We have JR Rail passes.

I understand we can use JR pass from Tokyo to Odawara. I will then buy a Hakone Free Pass in Odawara.

But in Odawara, is it the Hakone Tozan Railway that gets me from Odawara to Gora, or do I need to get on the Odakyu Rail to Hakone-Yumoto first, then transfer in Hakone-Yumoto to the Hakone Tozan Railway to get to Gora. Its not clear to me and I need to make sure so I can check the appropriate train schedules.

Thank you!

You don't need a train schedule. They run every few minutes.
From Odawara there is a shuttle train to Hakone Yumoto. At Hakone Yumoto just cross the platform to the Hakone-Tozan mountain railway and take the train to Gora (the last station).
At Gora, the cable car to Sounzan is right beside the Hakone-Tozan tracks.
If you're only going to Sounzan, then back to Odawara, a Hakone Free Pass will be much too expensive. Just buy regular tickets.

Thank you.
We will drop our luggage off at the ryokan and then explore Hakone..hence the need for the pass.

Is this shuttle train from Odawara to Hakone Yumoto part of the Odakyu line then? I'd like to check the schedule just on the return, because I will need to catch the JR from Odawara to Kyoto. As I'll need the cable car, and two trains, a few minutes wait on each one can add up.

Not sure whether you can find the schedule online but you can get the pamphlets at the various points of transport once you get to Hakone or perhaps when you purchase the Hakone Free Pass at Odawara.

Otherwise, you can check hyperdia first and confirm it with the pamphlet when you are in Hakone.

Five railroad operators have Odawara Stations (with JR-East and JR-Central counted as two JR companies), which are located nearby.
http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/stations/e382.html
Odakyu (Odawara Line) and Hakone Tozan Railway are jointed in Odawara, and they share the tracks and the gate there.

On the section Odawara -- Hakone-Yumoto, Hakone Tozan Railway is using train cars offered by Odakyu. (Maybe that has caused your confusion.)
There are some through trains (including Odakyu Romancecar trains) which run on both Odakyu Odawara Line and this Hakone Tozan Railway section.

The railroad route Odawara -- Hakone-Yumoto -- Gora belongs to Hakone Tozan Railway.
There is, however, no train available through the whole route.
Shuttle trains are running on each of the two sections until and after Hakone-Yumoto.
You can change trains in Hakone-Yumoto Station usually via the same platform.

I understand we can use JR pass from Tokyo to Odawara.

Your JR gate in Odawara Station depends on whether you use Tokaido Shinkansen of JR-Central or Tokaido Line of JR-East.
When you start from Tokyo Metropolis, you can make this choice in either Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station. When you use Tokaido Shinkansen of JR-Central from Tokyo Station, please make sure not to pass through a Shinkansen gate of JR-East. (In Shinagawa Station, there is no other Shinkansen line, so you can just follow signs and icons for Shinkansen.)
A typical icon for Tokaido Shinkansen has blue parts.

I will then buy a Hakone Free Pass in Odawara.

A Hakone Freepass is available at a ticket vending machine of Odakyu in Odawara Station.
http://www.odakyu.jp/english/traffic/howto/ticket/
Or, you can purchase one in the branch office (Odawara Travel Center) of Odakyu Travel
(open on weekdays from 10:00 to 19:00, open on other days from 10:00 to 18:00),
which is located across the walkway from the Odakyu gate.

I need to make sure so I can check the appropriate train schedules.

Hakone Tozan Railway is offering on the website timetables showing connections of trains and cable cars.
Words such as station names are written in Japanese, which may not be displayed adequately, but train times are written with single-space digits and colons.

Timetables showing connections of trains (Odawara -- Hakone-Yumoto, Hakone-Yumoto -- Gora) and cable cars (Gora -- Sounzan)
: Times shown with red digits (in the blue part) indicate Odakyu Romancecar trains. When you take one on this section between Odawara and Hakone-Yumoto, an additional charge (200 yen per adult) is required.
(A) In the direction of Sounzan
: Weekdays
http://www.hakone-tozan.co.jp/time/index.html
: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays
http://www.hakone-tozan.co.jp/time/time_2.html
: Departure times in Odawara Station are shown in the first blue row. Arrival times in Hakone-Yumoto Station are shown in the last blue row. In the same way, the red part corresponds to the railroad section Hakone-Yumoto -- Gora, and the yellow part corresponds to the cable car section Gora – Sounzan.
(B) In the direction of Odawara
: Weekdays
http://www.hakone-tozan.co.jp/time/time_3.html
: Saturdays, Sundays and holidays
http://www.hakone-tozan.co.jp/time/time_4.html
: Departure times in Sounzan (cable car) station are shown in the first yellow row. Arrival times in Gora (cable car) station are shown in the last yellow row. In the same way, the red part corresponds to the railroad section Gora -- Hakone-Yumoto, and the blue part corresponds to the railroad section Hakone-Yumoto – Odawara.

Thank you so much. I think this is exactly what I'm looking for - a schedule from Sounzen to Gora.

Yes, the confusion is I'm not sure if this is a Hakone Torzan Railway or Odakyu.

It looks like I can simply use the Hakone Torzan Railway, but have to transfer at Hakone Yumoto.
