If you are interested in history and temples, there are 2 parts of the Shikoku Pilgrimage Route that are popular for 1 day walks/hikes. The first is the first part in Tokushima Prefecture. The other is the temples in Kagawa Prefecture in and around Zentsuji City. This site lists a few popular mountain hikes: http://japanhike.wordpress.com/shikoku/There's a lot of nature around Shikoku, so there are a lot of options, but many places are difficult to reach without a car.
