Thanks to those who responded. It seems a JR Pass is not necessary. Can I purchase the rail tickets needed when there without an exchange document? My requirements would be Nagoya - Takayama Takayama - Kyoto Kyoto to Nagoya Airport
Thank you

Yes, just go to the manned ticket counters (Midori madoguchi) in the station. Note that it helps to write down the train names, numbers and departure times first and then give that to the attendant when purchasing your tickets.

- Related thread http://www.japan-guide.com/forum/quereadisplay.html?0+116247Central Japan International Airport [NGO, Centrair] is located outside Nagoya City. It is Meitetsu [Nagoya Railroad], not a JR company, which operates trains between Centrair and Nagoya. Arriving from Centrair, you can pass through West Ticket Gate of Meitetsu Nagoya Station and go up a nearby escalator to Nagoya Station of JR. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2431.htmlhttp://www.meitetsu.co.jp/eng/route/major/nagoya.htmlThe other railway legs in your itinerary are by JR lines. In a JR Ticket Office in Nagoya Station of JR, you can try reserving your seats of JR Shinkansen and Ltd. Express trains then purchase all the JR tickets. If you show a memo of dates, time zones and stations to a JR ticket attendant, he/she can search for trains which may suit your itinerary. Enjoy your trips!
