Where Can I get or find Train Schedule? 2014/8/20 10:54
Is there a website online that lists the train schedules for all trains in Japan.

Especially interested in getting the schedule for travel between Tokyo to Hakone and Kyoto.

I certainly don't want to wait too long for the train to arrive or board a slow train if there is a better one available.

Thanks.

Hi AJ

You can search in http://www.hyperdia.com/en/
Then, you can click on TStation Timetable to see timetable of the specific journey for the day

Or you can check in JR East site but you have to know the train that you are going to board on (via hyperdia or jorudan)

Hyperdia. The same site that gets mentioned every darn time. A quick search would give you the same answer that hundreds of people have asked before, and it hasn't changed.

In the hyperdia website, may I ask if the train schedules valid for the rest of 2014?
Thank you.

No worry all railways "regular" trains timetable not change until big change in Next MAR(2015) mid most.

Just only "seasonal" trains info update yet.
Timetable updates every month day 20 after most.
(day 20 means book type sales date)

This is simply not true. For Shinkansen especially the summer timetable (July to September) is significantly different from the timetable during the rest of the year. Many people who have planned their summer trips before the summer timetable was announced have been forced to change their plans. The same will happen to those who plan their autumn trip following the summer timetable.

Dear Firas
My trip will be in early Nov.
Now I am planning using the summer schedule.
Would checking again in early Oct ensures I get the latest train schedule?
Thank you.

@Firas

No changed regular ones in Summer just seasonal trains plus a lot.

Big change is ダイヤ改正
Small changes are 増発/増便 as 臨時 every seasons.

Searching for routes, timetables, etc. 2014/8/20 19:55
It is not only in March that timetables of regular trains may be revised.
HyperDia sometimes does not reflect new timetables by the date of the revision.

(a) JR-Hokkaido will revise its timetables on 30 August 2014, within 10 days from now.
(b) Some JR railroad operators offering Haneda Airport [HND] and/or Narita Airport [NRT] accesses may revise their timetables in October. (They did in October 2013.)
: Keisei Electric Railway and Hokuso Railway lines (including Narita SKY ACCESS).
: Toei subway Asakusa Line.
: Keikyu lines.

Regarding (b), I do not recommend relying on HyperDia about timetables for these lines when you plan your November journey.
You can estimate your time required for traveling between HND / NRT and some major stations and destinations by checking japan-guide.com articles.
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2430.html
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2027.html

When you search for routes and traveling time to major tourist destinations, I recommend you check related japan-guide.com articles before relying on route-finding tools.
Route-finding tools such as HyperDia and Jorudan answer routes which are logically possible, but they are not always practical or suitable for specific passengers.
HyperDia, under some conditions, answer roundabout routes (e.g. turning back needlessly to use Shinkansen).
Jorudan is regarding some stations in one area as the same even though their gates are located a little apart (e.g. Namba, JR-Namba and Osaka-Namba Stations).

JR-East is offering on its website timetables of its Shinkansen lines and some of its Ltd. Express trains.
http://www.eki-net.com/pc/jreast-shinkansen-reservation/english/wb/com...
Regarding Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo -- Nagoya -- Kyoto -- Shin-Osaka, operated by JR-Central) and San(-)yo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka -- Okayama -- Hiroshima -- Hakata, operated by JR-West), JR-Central is offering on its website timetables of regular trains (i.e. trains except extra trains).
http://english.jr-central.co.jp/info/timetable/index.html
These timetables of JR-East, JR-Central and JR-West may be revised in March.

Thanks for all comments.
Overall, where can travellers get the updated train schedules esp for trips starting from Nov onwards?
Thank you.

Correction 2014/8/20 20:04
Sorry for a simple typo.
NOT: (b) Some JR railroad operators
BUT: (b) Some non-JR railroad operators

Dear the anonymous posting questions: Are you the same person as the original poster AJ? (Even if not, I suppose the above responses are good also for the original poster, but you should refrain from hijacking a thread, which is against a guideline.)
--------

… (anonymous): My trip will be in early Nov.

Could you post your current (draft of) itinerary in a new thread?
Without knowing precisely which places you may visit, we cannot tell you exactly which transportation modes will suit your trips or when you can get the updated timetables.

where can travellers get the updated train schedules esp for trips starting from Nov onwards?

Well, one thing you can do now is to get railroad timetables for days in September and plan a flexible itinerary with some additional time. Then at the end of October you can check your train schedules, and amend them if it is necessary.
Regarding Tokaido Shinkansen and San(-)yo Shinkansen, you can use the above-mentioned timetables in English language because they list regular Shinkansen trains only and the next revision is expected after your journey, though you cannot find extra Shinkansen trains.

You need to pay attention to days of week and public holidays.
Public holidays in Japan until November 2014 will be
the 15th (Mon.) and 23rd (Tue.) of September,
the 13th (Mon.) of October
and the 3rd (Mon.), 23rd (Sun.) and 24th (Mon.) of November.
e.g. For your train rides on 3 November (Mon.) which will be a public holiday, it’s better to see timetables for a Sunday in September, not a normal weekday, because timetables for weekends and holidays will apply to many lines on this day.

In cases where trains are available until a little after the midnight, the last trains after the midnight are counted as trains of the day until the midnight.
e.g. A JR Yamanote Line train departing at 00:04 on 10 November is counted as a train of 9 November.

Re: Where Can I get or find Train Schedule? 2014/8/21 09:12
Definitely not the same person but information was quite useful. Like the other guy, I intend to travel early-mid November and will take note of the changes in the train schedule as well.

And I find Hyperdia more informative and practical as they give alternative routes and that is quite useful if you are looking into savings/cost.

thanks.
