My partner and I will be in Japan from the 23rd Sep and would like to climb 'a little' of Mt Fuji just to say we were on it, is this possible?

It's technically possible to climb year round (provided you can find transport or don't mind climbing from the base of Fuji at the start of the Yoshida trail), however outside of climbing season the temperature at the higher altitudes can drop a lot, it's up to you how far you want to go depending on weather. Also many of the mountain huts are actually open well into September, but the 23rd is probably a bit late for them I think. Hard to tell what services are available exactly so come prepared and constantly check the forecasts, especially temperature if you don't have serious alpine climbing clothes.
