live translation on phone 2014/8/26 06:05
Recently I tried to book a ryokan on the phone because I had some questions and the ryokan immediately set up a 3 way conference call with a translator and my questions were answered. Are there tourist information centres within Japan or local government tourism centres which offer this kind of translation to non-Japanese speaking foreign tourists by phone as that would be quite useful at least for me as I travel around the countryside mostly ?

I don't know about tourist information centres within Japan or local government tourism centres but this JR Pass website (http://www.japan-rail-pass.com/) offers a paid service for a small fee is your purchase one of the JR passes from them.
