Hi,
Firstly I would like to thank for any inputs.I am travelling solo to Japan for the first time from Dec24-Jan7.Below you can see the rough itinerary. My question is regarding the purchase of JR pass.Seeing the list of places I am visiting below ,would you advise going for a 1 week or 2 JR weeks pass or rather no JR pass and instead buy tickets in Japan itself (Mix of JR pass/local train pass).

Tokyo - Nikko round trip = ~10000
Tokyo - Hiroshima = 18360
Hiroshima - Kyoto = 11090
Kyoto - Tokyo = 13600
Total on main trip : 53050
JR 14 days : 46390

It will be worth it if you get JR 14 days in this case. However, do be aware of New Year in Japan. Many shops/business/establishments are closed from 29th December to 4th(or longer) January, http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2276.html

Since you are doing Tokyo-Hiroshima-Tokyo within a 7-day period, I believe you would be better off buying the 7-day JR pass and buying separate passes for Nikko (probably the Tobu Nikko Free Pass) and Hakone (probably the Hakone Free Pass). JR is not really the best way to get to Nikko and Hakone anyway. Turn in your exchange order for the JR pass soon after you get to Tokyo and make reservations at that time for the long-distance trains.
