Is it possible to climb Mt. Fuji after September 15th? Some websites suggest that the mountain trails above the 5th station are closed and climbing is prohibited. Thanks.

Is it possible to climb Mt. Fuji after September 15th?
It is outside the official climbing season but the trails remain open and it is possible to climb. In addition, the buses continue to run almost daily to all the 5th stations around the mountain.
Most of the huts will be closed, but there may be one or two still open at that time. Just be wary of the weather. It's generally milder and there's no snow yet, but it can be cold and wet.

we are a party of 3 that have experience hiking in the Alps--not technical climbing, but lots of hiking. We are in good physical shape and have good boots and clothing.

If you have not experienced only the Alps in the summer, then climb is better to quit is good. Hut is closed is after September 15, and no toilet. Is bring a portable toilet. Fujinomiya trail is passable up to 6 station. Hut is open until mid-October there. Subashiri trail is not passable. However hut Taiyo-kan of 7 station are open until mid-October. It snowed in the summit on September 12, two years ago. The first snow fell on August 23, this year. Please translate here. http://www001.upp.so-net.ne.jp/fujisan/fuji-sept.html

To be clear, the trails never truly "close", but they will post signs that say that the climbing season is over, basically indicating that you will be proceeding at your own risk. Most toilets and huts will indeed be closed by the 15th, but they are not required for hiking and just a convenience anyway. For men it's not such an issue, but the mountain is pretty exposed so women may have a more difficult time in this area. Just be aware of the weather and bring proper hiking gear and cold weather clothing and you'll be fine.
