Visiting Hokkaido from 21 to 28 November 2014 2014/9/16 14:14
Hi there,

I will be making my first visit to Hokkaido in this period. I have been to Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo in the last 2 years.

This time I will focus on the popular spots in Hokkaido. I plan to visit Sapporo, Hakodate and Otaru.

I want to experience the snowfall and skiing.

One day tour to ski destination is very much looking forward.

Please recommend the place to visit in these short period of time.

Thanks in advance

Well.
It is very important to state which airport you are entering by and what time the flights are. Budget is also essential.
Would you be renting a car?

Taking into consideration that you probably aint driving in Hokkaido is the following plan:
Eg Plan
Nov
21
Tokyo fly to shin chitose airport
Go to Sapporo
Shop
Go to beer/chocolate/cheese factory
Night at Sapporo

22
Go to Otaru
Leave luggage at a train station
Explore and have lunch here
Train to Niseko
Ski and overnight at a ski resort

23
More Skiing in the morning
Go to lake Toya
Check into the hotel
Circle around the lake as you explore the town
Defrost at the onsen

24
Head to Noboribetsu
Take the cable car to the bear zoo and wave to the bears
Do some light trekking/hiking
If you are fit, walk to Kuttaro lake
Defrost at the hotel onsen
Walk through the town as the sun sets
The hotels here serves good dinner sets/dinner buffets

25
Head to Nanoe (if luggage permits)
The blue lake north of Hakodate
Head to Hakodate
Night at Hokkaido
See the night view atop Mt Hokadate

26
Go to the market, fresh & raw seafood is in abundance. The market sells raw/grilled on the spot food.
Nearby restaurants sells seafood.
See the various European buildings.
See the Fort.
Head to Matsue for a change of pace. If not, just stick around Hakodate; Hokkaido ramen is said to have originated here.

27
Fly from Hakodate airport to Tokyo for you flight out of Japan
Unless your flight is really early in the morning, there is enough time for shopping. All the major hokkaido snack brands have branches here.

28
This day is a buffer as I do not know your flight times
If there is time, spend days 21 and 22 in Sapporo and the nearby attractions
Daisetsuzan is always a nice side trip but it is pretty out of the way unless flying into Asahikawa

Re: Visiting Hokkaido from 21 to 28 November 2014 2014/9/21 22:12
If there isn't a car, then getting a train pass an essential. Naturally, going by tour is convenient as the train system in Hokkaido isn't as fabulous as the Tokyo-Hiroshima route.

But if there isn't that option, then use the train. Buses aren't bad either as there are highways, but finding out the schedules for buses... I don't know where such information is available.

With regards to shopping, it depends on what you like to buy. Sapporo as compared to Tokyo has less options. But as the name Sapporo goes, Sapporo beer and other beverages are cheaper then at Tokyo. Similarly, Kirin beer enjoys a cheaper price. Many famous chocolate factories are in the vicinity of Sapporo. The issue is that the prices are usually fixed no matter which part of Japan you are in. It is just the variety is way more at the factories.
Getting to the choc/beer/cheese factories... Use Japan Guide. I recommend train to the nearest station followed by a taxi. Or just a taxi from the hotel. Taxis in Hokkaido are generally more reasonable as compared to other parts of Japan.

For usual apparel and other shopping, going along Sapporo Dori is fine. The department stores are between the Dori and the Sapporo Station.

Going to Otaru= Train
Please buy a hokkaido train pass

I have no idea how big your bags are or how big the lockers are.
They do have lockers of various sizes.
Otaru via JR HAKODATE LINE all the way till Niseko station. One train, no transfers
I would presume that there are trainers, a quick google search gave me
http://instructortrainingacademy.com

Use agoda or some other hotel website for hotel booking.
Niseko via JR Hakodate line to OSHAMAMBE then via JR Muroran Line to Toya
Take a Donan bus from the Toya station to Lake Toya.
Cycling or walking. There is a boat ride around the lake too. Up to your pretence. The cycle will take no more then an hour.

Again... it is the train... From Toya station to Noboribetsu station. From noboribestu station take a bus or a taxi to the onsen. If you made prior contact with the hotel, call them now, and they may send a minivan you way.

Trek etc. Ask hotel for help. They would provide you with a map or point you to the nearest tourist info counter more a map.

Kuttaro is about 45 min according to Google maps. It is north of the town. The lake is nearly a perfect circle making it nice to look at. There may be mist in the morning. Think San Fran.

To stroll the length of the town takes about half an hour. So it is pretty hard to get lost. The central part of town can be covered in 20 minutes.

Nanoe
Train please. Make use of your train pass

Hakodate mountain travel info

Walk to the market
Use a map provided by hotel or a tourist info counter. Or just google it.

Western area info
Walkable
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5351.html

For shopping. Along the bay. The brick warehouses are popular. Especially the cheesecake. Just ask random people "Red Brick Warehouse"
The Western area has stuff too to buy. Window shopping.

In Hakodate airport there are many snack shops. Jagabee; Ishidaya; Rottakei... etc

Dear Joshua

Thanks a lot for your reply.

After what you have posted I am considering renting a car to drive around. My concern is whether the GPS is English friendly and is it convenient to drive in Hokkaido during this period?

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: Visiting Hokkaido from 21 to 28 November 2014 2014/9/22 22:51
Yes, driving is recommended. There are highways, some needing toll roads. Renting a portable wifi at the airport and using Google maps on your smart phone is one way to get around.

Never used GPS in Japan so I cannot say. But from what I can tell, you don't key in addresses, you key in the telephone number of the hotel/retail/restaurant.

The driver seat is on the right side of the car. Speed limit is 80 km/h on highways. There are English signage on roads. But I have never been on the roads around Furano/Biei/Asahikawa/Daisetsuzan so whether there is signage there... But Sapporo-Toya-Noboribetsu-Hakodate should be fine.
