Fukuoka 2 days 2014/9/20 03:16
Hi All,

I have two days and 1 night in Fukuoka. I am planning to see on the first day Ohori park, Canal city, food stalls, and Hakata Lantern festival. The second day take the train with my JR pass to Kumamoto castle and Suizenji Garden. Back to Fukuoka by 7 to catch my JR train back to Tokyo.
I have never been to Kyushu, but with only two days I would like to see what I can. I am with a group of four and we move at a medium pace (to slow if we really like where we are).
Is this possible? Am I going too fast through Fukuoka? Any other suggestions or add-on's to consider?

Thanks

It depends on your interests, of course. But you could add a few very good places.
In Fukuoka one often overlooked and unknown jewel is the nearby Nanzoin Temple and Great Buddha - truly mind blowing:

Another is in the Gion area - the Tochoji Great Buddha - 2 in the same area and both free!

Also the Fukuoka Tower is very popular for its great view (if the weather is good). The best time might be just before sunset, to watch the city turn from day to night. Atago Jinja is a hilltop shrine with a splendid view of the city and bay. For more ideas, look at:

The ramen stalls (yatai) are worth a meal for the experience, but if not, you can walk through them in about 10 minutes and enjoy the people watching. The Nakasu neon lights on the river are nice there too:

A water bus tour might interest you as well:

In Kumamoto the Suizenji Garden is a must-see. It's really beautiful and unique:

But 2 places in one day is either very leisurely to lacking itinerary. You might want to pick someplace else to add if time allows; see:

Going to see Mt. Aso is a typical option; it's a bit of a trip to get there, but how many places in the world can you peer down the crater of a live volcano?

Some good suggestions above.
I don't know if Canal City would be worth the time especially if you are spending time in Tokyo with its shopping centers.
It is a large shopping mall with the regular array of name brands , its "Ramen Stadium "can be fun.
I'd suggest walking down the Kawabata Arcade, for shopping,

It is right next to Canal City, stopping at the Kushida Shrine with parade float on display, The Hakata Traditional Craft Museum is also close by in Gion.
The Yatai are cool to check out for a light bite but I'd consider also finding a restaurant for a more leisurely meal.
Some great food options .
We had a great time at Kumamoto Castle and then the Hosokawa Mansion which is close by. Kumamotos rail station is a ways from the city center so I'd hit the garden first then work back. Some fun covered shopping arcades in the Kumamoto downtown too.
Have fun
