Changing one type of work visa to another

Hello everyone,
I'll be starting an eikaiwa job in November but as I have a degree in Biomedical Sciences I may look for lab work down the line. Just wondering if anyone had ever changed their visa from a humanities (teaching visa) to one for academic research/industrial laboratory work (if there is such a thing).
