Help with travel to Kurobe Alpine Route

I'll be staying in Hida-Takayama for the Matsuri/festival next month(9-10th), and was interested in seeing the Kurobe Alpine Route and Kurobe dam, I know my JR pass doesn't cover the route up there but I'm willing to pay my way. Anyone know how much it costs and what the suggested route would be?
Is it something I should set a day aside for, or will it be worth staying 2 days?
How cold is it expected to be in October?
Ultimately I'll be heading back to Kyoto when all is done.
