Traveling Japan for 6 days 2014/10/1 03:19
Hello fellow Japan lovers and travelers!

I'm going to be spending about 5ish days in Japan and wanted to know what I must see/do while I'm there! I know I'd like to visit these places:

Disney Sea
Ghibli Museum
Kyoto
Oosaka

We're going to be staying in the Shibuya-ko areas... so I'd love some advice! Our fight arrives at 12:50 PM so lets start with when we land all the way through the week! Thanks a bunch!

Kyoto and Osaka are a long way away from Tokyo - it's about 2.5 hours to Osaka from Tokyo by train, and it costs about 300,000 yen return! You might want to consider flying, or restricting your travel to the Tokyo area only given you are spending such a short time in Japan. You could do some side trips outside of the city, to places like Hakone, Nikko or Kamakura.

Not 300,000 yen but 30,000 yen.

You might better consider some "air passes", depending your actual itinerary and preferences.

JAL Yokoso Japan fare and Welcome to Japan fare.

ANA Visit Japan fare and Star Alliance Japan Airpass

As you will see, the train fare and the air fare is very close, and the traveling time is also close. If you use Narita airport, the flight to Osaka Itami is not so frequent.

Woops, yes, sorry about that monetary mix-up! Flying is actually cheaper is you're happy to go with a low-cost airline; Peach airlines will fly you from Toyko (Narita International) to Kansai airport for around 6500 yen with luggage. From there you could go to Osaka or Kyoto. But since you've only got a few days and you'd want to see Tokyo as well as a day at Disney, I still recommend looking into side-trips from the city rather than inter-city travel. You don't want to waste so much time travelling for just a day in Osaka or Kyoto, unless it's something you really have your heart set on.

Check the Japan Guide pages for things to do in Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka and make a list from highest to lowest "Want to See", then maybe pick top 5 or so things and plan from there. Five days is a pretty short time... I'd honestly stick to one area instead of trying to do both Tokyo area and Kyoto/Osaka. If you are determined to see both, then as others said, a flight will be your fastest travel, but even then, you'll spend time traveling when you could be sightseeing. I'd do just Tokyo OR Kyoto/Osaka and save other places for a return trip. Just my two yen.

In all honesty, I wouldn't really recommend flying as a better option although it's true that with airlines such as Peach, it may work out slightly cheaper than the train.

You have to factor in getting to and from airports, check in times and delays as well as flight times themselves. Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka on the bullet train is about 2.5 hours (Nozomi) and I'm sure that adding everything else in, going by plane would actually take longer.

As others have said though, with such a short time in Japan and at least two to three days in Tokyo already planned, unless you want to rush madly about and not do either place justice, I suggest forgetting about the Kansai area on this trip and saving that for another occasion. There are plenty of easy day trips to take from Tokyo and the three already suggested (Hakone, Kamakura & Nikko) are all worth visiting.

Have a great trip!
