Hokkaido housing style origins 2014/10/20 12:36
I have just spent 10 glorious days travelling in Hokkaido and found the housing style very different to Japan. I know the homes are relatively recent but the wide use of colours, unusual and multiple roof lines. Looks Scandinavian. Where does the influence come from? Anyone know? No info online about it.

Thanks so much. Your link describes each of the housing types we saw. Didn't realise the design was basically environmentally driven.
Also saw heaps more blue roofs than I've seen before. And I've never seen so many barns but I guess you need lots of storage and weather protection for animals. Thanks for your reply.

Also notice there are no rain gutters. This is to let the snow slide off and to prevent the ice dam.
