I know I need a bachelor's to get a work visa and later possibly reside in Japan permanently. I will probably Get a work visa through a program such as JET, but what is the best or most useful degree to have if I don't want to teach after my teaching contract expires?

Not sure why you want to teach at all, then... Anyway, "marketable" majors in Japan are the same as everywhere else: finance, IT, etc.

I would say IT jobs, finance and engineering. They pay better than English teaching jobs anyway.
