Generally speaking, it is an extremely busy itinerary. Very little time for Osaka, Kyoto, Gifu, Kanazawa, Mount Fuji and Gotemba. You should allocate at least one - preferably two - additional days to make it more realistic.

Day1

Osaka - (train) - kyoto - (train) - gifu

See Hyperdia for train connections:
http://www.hyperdia.com/

Day2

There is a bus from Nagoya to Shirakawago, but advance reservations are required:
http://www.gifubus.co.jp/

Alternatively, you could travel by train and bus via Takayama or Kanazawa. Train connections can be looked up here:
http://www.hyperdia.com/

The bus timetable for Kanazawa-Shirakawago-Takayama here:
http://www.japan-guide.com/bus/shirakawago.html

Day 3 should be obvious:
http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e7550.html

Day4

Omachi to Gotemba is a time-consuming trip. Mount Fuji is along the way. So, you better visit it before going down to Gotemba:

Omachi - (train via Matsumoto) - Kofu - (bus) - Kawaguchiko/Mount Fuji - (bus) - Gotemba

Re: Ititenary 2014/10/23 10:32
How long exactly do you have in Japan for this trip? You are doing WAY too much and absolutely need to skip most of it if it is only 4 days long like it says in your original post. Basically as you have it now, you're going to step off the train in one city, go "whelp, I've been to Kyoto! Onward!" and get right back on the train. You wont actually SEE anything... and with a 4 year old?! He isn't going to appreciate Takayama and Shirakawa-go. He isn't going to care about the Alpine Route except that he's tired and hungry and doesn't want to walk/sit on the bus/train/whateve anymore. Sorry.

He IS going to like either that Thomas the Train museum, the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, the Railway Museum in Saitama, etc.

It doesn't matter if those destinations are important to YOU, especially if you'll be spending more time in Japan later on. And even if they ARE important for you, as I said before, you aren't seeing them anyway! If you're flying into Osaka, and flying out of Tokyo, stick to JUST Osaka and Tokyo. Don't try to get fancy with a 4 year old.
