Fukuoka connection time question

My ANA flight will be landing at FUK at 9:15am and I wish to take a shinkansen using my JR pass from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo.
Will I have enough time, provided I am quick to recognize the layout and directions, to retrieve my luggage, take the subway to Hakata and board the Sakura service train at 9:58am or am I going to need to just take it easy and wait for the following one at 10:45am?
Is the connection just too tight to even try to make the first one?

WOW! I like your optimism!! have no idea myself, at all, not been to either Fukuoka airport or Hakata station, but that sort of schedule scares me to bits! I do know they are not far away etc etc I’d relax and go for the later option...but that’s just me....we always look around for more food and drink in a layover....lol You are also going to be relying on the Flight being on time, baggage arriving early (with a schedule like that Murphy’s law would be your case would be last off) and and and...... Can always try with non reserved seats and fly in the door of the first one if your lucky!! Good luck!!!

Even if you land via domestic planes, I'm afraid if you can get on the first train. However the second one I think you can catch it as far as you plane is a domestic flight.

Thank you! Yes, I failed to mention it is a domestic flight from Haneda. I was just clutching at straws. I was planning on the 10:45 one, which I am sure I can make. I was hopeful it would be quick, but I'll just relax and take it easy in Hakata. Thank you once again!

As long as your flight is on time, I would say it should be possible to catch that first train. In my experience, for domestic flights Fukuoka is pretty efficient. On international flights it's a different story, customs at Fukuoka can take pretty long.
I would just see how it goes, if at 9.35 you still don't have your luggage, just take it easy and go for the next train.

Thanks Wizard.... That extra hour would be nice since I'm only there for a day, but I don't want to reserve a seat unless I'm sure to occupy it. Others would have reserved seats on both, but that's not my style and that's not the polite way of doing things.
I'll just take it easy and stroll through the airport and Hakata station for a nice place for brunch!

Another thought: could you forward luggage so you don’t have to wait for it at Fukuoka? That would be a huge time saver?? Good luck again!!

AusTF, I will be using Yamato to forward my suitcase, but not on that leg. From Kagoshima to Nagasaki to by pass Kumamoto, yes. I'll do it from Hiroshima to Okayama to bypass Matsuyama as well as a few other times. I'll live out of my backpack for the one day in-between those. But when I fly, I'd rather take it with me. Thank you for the suggestion!

If you want to get on 9:58 Sakura, you must arrive at Subway Hakata station at 9:48 (I think 10 min transfer time is required). To meet this restriction, you must get on 9:37 subway train. You have 22 min between the arrival time and the 9:37 train. Well, maybe possible, maybe not.
The bright side is that Sakura is not crowded in general and you can get the reserved seat at Hakata station (if you have time, of course). If you can not have one, there are non-reserved seats and after Kumamoto, you will be able to find vacant seats in either the reserved or non-reserved cars.
Anyway, welcome to Kagoshima. We are looking for you making big holes in Kagoshima!

Thank you frog1954! I will just take the 10:45 Sakura and be hassle-free! I'll miss out on one of the attractions, as they close in the late p.m., but I still have the night! Any good areas with izakaya you can recommend close to K-Chuo station? I'm staying at the Toyoko Inn there. Thanks!
